I do not believe there is a singular “right way” or "method" to work as an actor. While my background is primarily sensory based, everyone is different and will respond uniquely to various techniques. A teacher’s job is to help discover what works for you and what will help you tap into the truth of a situation. In turn, this will enable you to authentically identify with a character's struggles, wounds, belief systems, and then be free to follow your creative impulses within this context.
For me, the art of acting is a healing one. We do not "dig deep" to create pain, but rather to unlock the wounds that are within us and use the scenes and characters to heal. If done honestly, that experience has the power to heal others. We've all felt it while watching a great performance. We identify and connect with the characters on stage or screen, and something happens. We feel ourselves going on the journey with them, praying they grow and overcome the challenges they face. This is what acting is all about. The actor's job is to experience what their character is going through so honestly that the audience may have that experience as well, leaving both the actor and the audience feeling inspired, enlightened, and possibly healed.
In keeping with the idea that there is no one right way, I have been lucky enough to study with many great teachers, including Sheila Gray, Austin Pendleton, Robert Verllaque, Sara Mornell, Natsuko Ohama, Jon Stancato, and more. By working with these teachers and through working professionally on stage and screen, I have found a myriad of techniques that can help free the actor: from Strasberg to Meisner, from Uta Hagen to Comedia Del Arte, from Alexander to Linklater.
Everyone has a different intention in pursuing a life as an actor and I respect all of them. That said, if you are looking for a quick route to overnight success, I might not be the teacher for you. However, if you are looking to go on a creative journey of honing your craft, committing to truth, and learning to make the unique choices that only you can bring to the character... then I would love to help you on that journey.
